Jo Salter
Jo Salter was Britain’s first female fighter pilot flying the Tornado GR1 Fighter. At that point she was one of only 5 women fighter pilots in the world. Unsurprisingly she was described as “One of the 50 most inspiring women in the world” by Harpers & Queen.
About Jo Salter
Jo Salter is also a very entertaining after dinner speaker whose anecdotes from her RAF days have her audiences in stitches as well as gawping in awe at some of her more astonishing and hair-raising incidents.
Jo Salter is also a talented and truly amazing host and motivational speaker. Working in intelligence and as a fast jet instructor, her tales from such an elite world offer alternative insights into personal development, meeting challenges and succeeding in the face of adversity.
Jo Salter had a day job which involved being in control of 25 million pounds of screaming metal flying just above the ground. Her decisions had to be immediate, her reflexes lightning fast. As a combat ready pilot with the 617 Squadron, the Dambusters, Jo experienced operational tours of duty and took part in large international NATO exercises around the world.
She has had a multifaceted military career which has encompassed technical, professional, managerial and political experience. Add this to five years of e-commerce and management consultancy in the public and the private sector as well as an MBA and it is no wonder Jo is in demand for her management and leadership theories and her humorous and moving range of speeches.
Jo has been an Associate Lecturer for the Open University Business School on their Certificate of Management programme. This includes modules such as Managing People, Managing Finance and Information, and Managing Customers and Quality. She also specialises in running leadership workshops and works as a high-performance coach and mentor, assisting executives meet their personal and business development needs. Jo has extensive experience of working with the media, from featuring on the front page of ‘The Times’ to international radio and television coverage. Her television appearances include ‘Record Breakers’ as well as various documentaries – including the BBC’s ‘Inside Out ‘programme and she can be heard as a regular guest on London’s leading talk radio station, LBC 97.3.
Since leaving the RAF she has learned to fly civil aircraft including the Airbus and is a business lecturer at the Open University.
In addition Jo Salter took part in Nancy’s Heroes, a recreation of Nancy Wake’s epic trek across the Pyrenees to Spain to escape the Nazis on the 14th September. As part of an 8 woman team she crossed the high peaks in 4 days following the Le Chemin De La Libertie, (The Freedom Trail) which was one of the hardest wartime escape routes in aid of the Royal British Legion. Jo uses her boundless energy, never-failing humour, compassion and understanding, as well as her technical skills to facilitate workshops, carry out life changing seminars, conduct high performance coaching sessions and enable individuals and organisations to solve problems. Achievement is a way of life for Jo – and, yes, achievement while living in the real world as a daughter, sister, partner, parent and friend. Jo is a determined and visionary realist so be prepared to be challenged.
Testimonials
"We thoroughly enjoyed Jo’s light hearted yet compelling take on the challenges she faced as a woman in the RAF. Jo manages to make a very serious point in a gentle and humorous way – but there is no doubt that this is a serious woman with real grit and determination. Her style fitted a pre-dinner slot perfectly and lightened the mood following a deep and thorough agenda during the day."

We have had fantastic feedback from our delegates and I thought it was a very interesting, engaging, entertaining and thoughtful keynote session. "Jo Salter spoke to a rapt audience of 2,000 Townswomen at their annual conference and had them alternately informed, enthralled and amused as she told the tale of her progress from her student days to her success as this country's first female jet-fighter pilot. Clearly the thoroughness which she must have brought to her flying ambitions has carried through to her appearance as a speaker, for hers is a lucid, articulate and brilliantly constructed description of life in the hot seat."
