South Asian Heritage Month Speakers
South Asian Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of the South Asian community. It is also a time to learn more about the challenges that South Asians have faced and to reaffirm our commitment to equality and justice.
The History of South Asian Heritage Month
South Asian Heritage Month was first celebrated in the UK in 2020. Unusually, the month spans two calendar months and is celebrated every year from 18th July to 17th August. The reason for this is that these dates encompass some of the most pivotal events in South Asian history, including The Indian Independence Act on 18th July and The Maldives, Bhutan, Pakistani and Indian Independence Days.
The month culminates with the Partition Commemoration Day on 17th August, which saw the publication of the Radcliffe Line in 1947, setting out where the border between India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan would be.
