About Roger Harrabin

Roger Harrabin is one of the media’s most influential voices on the environment, energy and climate change. As Energy and Environment Analyst he reported for the BBC for over 30 years. Roger’s achievements have been widely recognised. He is an Honorary lifetime fellow of St Catharine’s Cambridge; Associate Fellow, Green College Oxford and Wolfson College, Cambridge and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Cranfield University for work on the environment.

Biography

Roger Harrabin has been a global pioneer in environment reporting. He was founder presenter of the BBC environment programme Costing the Earth and has won many awards for his work in radio and TV.

His quest for impartiality led him to broadcast two three-part series on Radio 4 tackling the risks and uncertainties in climate science and technology. His reporting on new topics has often been trend-setting – he was, for instance, the first mainstream reporter to highlight the central role that energy would play in the environment. He has interviewed many influential figures including Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Ban Ki Moon, Al Gore and Sir David Attenborough.

Over his career he has traced the growing influence of environmental issues on domestic and international politics, and on business and society. As a speaker, he has many fascinating and often hilarious stories that work equally well after dinner as during the day.  As a moderator or chair he is noted for his challenging and humorous style, as well as his depth of knowledge.

About Seyi Akiwowo

Seyi Akiwowo is prolific political changemaker, using her voice to highlight the injustices our system imposes on minoritised groups. Seyi was also offered a MBE in 2022, which she decided not to accept. You can listen to her speak about that choice in this interview with Black Ballad. On a real note, Seyi is also a huge advocate for self care, sabbaticals, sleep and a good old shimmy.

Biography

Seyi Akiwowo is prolific political changemaker, using her voice to highlight the injustices our system imposes on minoritised groups. In 2017 Seyi penned a piece for The Guardian after the death of Rashan Charles, a young Black man who died at the hands of the police. Throughout her leadership of Glitch, Seyi has consistently shone a light on the absence of prioritised safety for marginalised communities, particularly Black women, in the Online Safety Bill, and has spoken in UK Parliament on the subject of digital citizenship.

Seyi is no stranger to awards. From Amnesty International’s Human Rights Defender in 2018, to recognition from publications like Marie Claire and Evening Standard in 2019; from being a finalist for the United Nations Women Awards in the UK to being on the front cover of WIRED magazine as their Changemaker in 2021. Seyi was also offered a MBE in 2022, which she decided not to accept.

Seyi has had many opportunities to speak at various important events, like her talk at TedX that spoke to Glitch’s mission to help end online abuse through digital citizenship. She has also spoken at Google in New York and OECD Paris; at the British Council in Qatar, Kuwait and UAE; at Bupa and Natwest; and for Botswana’s Parliament and the European Parliament in Brussels. Seyi has also lectured at both London School of Economics and UAL, and will be a keynote speaker at the Alan Turing Institute.

But change must come with collaboration, working with platforms rather than against them. Seyi has raised awareness through partnering on campaigns with big brands like BT Sport on the #DrawTheLineCampaign, as well as being appointed to the boards of platforms like TikTok and Twitter’s European Trust and Safety Council. With all of her experience and the many achievements under her belt, Seyi has made a name for herself as a top consultant where tech and policy intersect – someone who can be trusted to call out injustices whilst also offering actionable solutions that hold platforms to account and help individuals stay safe online.

Seyi can now add author to her list of humble brags. Her book How To Stay Safe Online, published by Penguin, is a digital self-care toolkit for developing resilience and allyship, offering anecdotes, interviews, tips and context for why online safety needs to be the next movement we all invest in, from individuals to Big Tech.

About Henry Blofeld

Henry Blofeld is an exceptional raconteur not only on all things cricket but about his incredible life experiences which include driving from London to Bombay in 1976 to appearing in a series the TV show Real Marigold Hotel which was made in India in 2019 with the likes of Britt Ekland, Zandra Rhodes, Barabra Dickson and Paul Chuckle.

Biography

Henry Blofeld may have left Test Match Special in 2017 but this was still not the end of an extraordinary career.

After 46 years describing cricket all over the world in those inimitable and charmingly plummy tones, and writing about it in newspapers for even longer, his eyes finally made commentary hazardous.

He was a wonderfully successful schoolboy cricketer scoring a hundred at Lord’s in 1956 at the age of sixteen. People then were even talking of him as a future England player.

The following year he was let down by his personal navigational system when he bicycled into a bus and was left unconscious for many days. His cricket was never the same again.

In 1959, he managed, with an excessive amount of luck, to get into a weak Cambridge University side and scored a first-class hundred, also at Lord’s.

Henry Blofeld’s passionate love of cricket

Cricket remained Henry’s first love and in 1962 he began to work as a freelance cricket writer for The Times. In the next few years, he wrote for The Guardian, The Observer, the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Express.

In the winter of 1963/64, he covered England’s tour of India for The Guardian, The Daily Sketch and The Observer. He fell in love with India and with the life of a cricket correspondent. His die was set.

He also came within two hours of playing in the Second Test of that series, in Mumbai, when as a result of illness and injury, it looked as if England would only have ten fit men. At the last moment, the vice-captain, Mickey Stewart, who was in hospital, decided he would be able to get out of bed and play.

Broadcasting came later. Blofeld covered his first county cricket match for the BBC at the end of May 1962. Then it all happened quickly for the following week he was chosen to commentate on two one-day internationals against Australia later that same summer.

His voice and command of the English language had impressed the bosses at Broadcasting House.

Joining the team on the iconic Test Match Special

The TMS team in those days contained a formidable array of broadcasters. It was led by the immortal Hampshires tones of John Arlott, and the clipped joviality of Brian Johnston.

For some time Blofeld was not asked to be much more than an occasional performer. There was little room for him for Alan Gibson, Christopher Martin-Jenkins and Don Mosey were also around.

His broadcasting opportunities for the BBC overseas were few as the official Cricket Correspondent was sent to cover the tours. When TMS first mounted its own commentary overseas, from India in 1976/77, Blofeld was on hand as a journalist and was co-opted as part of the commentary team and he helped overseas from then on.

From his earliest days as a broadcaster, he often worked for stations overseas. He commentated for a commercial network in Australia each year and for ten years every February and March he helped Television New Zealand with their coverage of home series in New Zealand. He also did local commentary in the West Indies.

An everlasting love for adventure

Henry Blofeld’s life was also filled with exciting and unlikely adventures. He and John Woodcock, the famous Cricket Correspondent of The Times, were the joint inspiration behind a famous drive to India in a 1921 Rolls Royce.

In early October 1976, Woodcock and Blofeld and three friends set off from London and completed the journey in 46 days arriving in Mumbai just in time for Woodcock and Blofeld to begin their newspaper coverage of Tony Greig’s England side in India in 1976/77.

In April 1980, Blofeld went as joint manager with fellow former Norfolk cricketer and England batsman, Peter Parfitt, as joint manager of a side chosen by Derrick Robins to tour six South American countries in just under a month.

It was as much fun as it sounds as we travelled from Caracas to Quito, to Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires, San Paulo and Rio.

Life After Cricket

By the time his cricket commentary ended, Blofeld had already been performing one- and two-man shows in theatres all around the UK. He also did some two-man shows, first with John Bly, the beautifully dressed and hugely knowledgeable and charming Antiques Road Show expert.

Then he teamed up with his great friend, Test Match Special producer for 34 years, Peter Baxter, and then with former and formidable England off spinner Graeme Swan.

Blowers as he is affectionately known often tours with yet another highly entertaining one-man show, My Dear Old Things.

Oh yes, and he has also written twenty books, about cricket and the many adventures the game has led him to in an extraordinarily varied and entertaining and exciting life.

Having commissioned Strictly Come Dancing and Dr. Who, Lorraine is well-versed in innovation, reinvention and leadership, rendering her a perfect choice for corporates audiences.

Biography

Lorraine Heggessey became CEO of British television production company, talkbackThames. She possesses an innate creative leadership and remarkable ability to motivate talent to drive commercial success. As a result, Lorraine totally revitalized the programming portfolio and saw the introduction of a new digital division.

Throughout her time in the role, Lorraine also oversaw the introduction of various hit entertainment shows, including Britain’s Got Talent and Take Me Out. The success of these shows were instant, and resulted in profits increasing by over 50% in Lorraine’s first two years.

Back in 2012, Lorraine made the leap to build a new independent production group. Leading Boom Pictures in her role as Executive Chair, Lorraine went on to build the 7th largest production company in Britain, worth c£100 million and eventually bought by ITV and renamed Two Four Group.

More recently Lorraine was CEO of The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. With instructions to use her incredible business acumen to professionalise and grow the Foundation, she helped develop and refine its unique model of venture philanthropy that incubates initiatives to tackle some of today’s biggest challenges. This included mental health – through the Heads Together campaign – and supporting wounded, sick and injured veterans.

Lorraine’s varied career has meant she is no stranger to controversy – known as the woman who sacked Blue Peter presenter Richard Bacon for taking cocaine, turned the tables on reporter Roger Cook by door stepping him for a Channel 4 Documentary and secured the first ever television interview with notorious villain Mad Frankie Fraser for a series on the history of crime in Britain.

A Fellow of the Royal Television Society and frequent judge for BAFTA and the RTS, Lorraine continues to act as an external advisor to Channel 4’s Growth Fund – set up to invest in small to medium sized production companies. She supports the companies in the portfolio helping them to deliver creative and commercial success. She is also Chair of the Grierson Trust, which celebrates and promotes documentary excellence through its annual awards and opens doors to the industry for young people from diverse backgrounds whose voices might otherwise not be heard.  She is a regular contributor to the Today Programme and Newsnight on media topics.

How to Persuade Anyone To Do Anything (well, almost!):  Getting your messages heard, believed, and acted on is a key business skill. Whether you’re in a leadership role, a salesperson, trying to get teams to work together, or to get buy-in for projects and resources, you need to be able to engage and persuade your colleagues and clients.

Making Networking Work: Almost all businesses will say that ‘word of mouth’ is crucial to their sales and business development, and everyone knows that having a strong network is key to personal and professional success. And yet almost no business has a ‘Networking Strategy’ for growth, and most people dread the idea of actively networking.

Grown-Ups Don’t use PowerPoint: The world is full of bad presentations and sales pitches, and they’re costing your business a fortune. Poor presentations waste people’s time, can slow down sales cycles and projects, add to endless pointless meetings and create confusion and procrastination. Worse, the presenter is often dull and flat and takes ages to get their point across (if they ever do!).

Drawing on this experience as a young CEO in the digital world, along with his 14 years at BMW, Jonny shares what he considers to be some of the key ingredients to effective leadership, and exposes some of the “old school” leadership styles that dramatically hold back organisations today.

Customer

Customer expectations seem to increase year on year, meaning that resting on your laurels is never an option.

Jonny explains how understanding the customer journey is the key to engaging effectively with your customers, and how to ensure that your organisation’s offering remains competitive in an age when no industry is safe from the threat of digital disruption.

About James Hardy

James Hardy is an expert at identifying how brands can maximise their value to external, private, and public markets. He explores what the largest global conglomerates can learn from start-up methodology, and what smaller companies can learn from brands such as Alibaba about scaling their business.

Biography

James Hardy has a background in legal mergers & acquisitions, and previously served as Head of Europe for Alibaba.  He then co-founded the UK’s largest China-ecommerce exporter – an award winning, high growth platform that helped brands throughout Europe build market share in mainland China.

As a highly regarded international thought-leader, James’ expertise has appeared in The Financial Times, The Huffington Post, The Journal du Net, The BBC and China Daily News.

Speech Topics

The future of eCommerce: Learnings from Alibaba: James explains how Alibaba’s ecosystem operates and why it has been so successful.  He focuses on how Alibaba has been able to move so fast, and disrupt so many industries, even those outside of its historical core areas.  He discusses the company structure, culture and approach to business value and relationships that has allowed it to become such a powerful force within China, and increasingly across the globe.

Ecosystems and the future of business: James explains what business ecosystems are, giving examples from multiple verticals to illustrate the speed and success derived from such an approach.  He explains why they are the future of business, and then ties this into a unified theory of business and an operating model for all businesses.

Alibaba: James discusses the Consumer-to-Business (C2B) model, on-demand development, automated decision-making, and exceptionally fast feedback loops. Alibaba is redefining some fundamental business concepts and James delves into Alibaba’s concept of Smart Business and what this means for the impact of emerging technologies.

Alibaba & Amazon: James discusses the radically different approaches of these two behemoths and what can be learned from each. Amazon is focused on its customers but not its suppliers, and owns most of its own capabilities. Alibaba is focused on all parties within its ecosystem and has multiple business partnerships in almost all areas it operates within. James pulls the primary learnings from each and predicts how they will fare when they compete head-to-head in countries such as India.
