Biography

Liam Halligan is a fine keynote speaker he has delivered speeches to numerous high-level audiences. Liam Halligan is best known for his weekly “Economics Agenda” column in The Sunday Telegraph, which he has written since 2003. The column enjoys a large international following and has been recognized with a highly-coveted British Press Award. He also writes regularly for The Spectator and The Sun.

His proven ability to combine economic analysis with political insight also makes him very popular at numerous annual conferences political party “fringe” events. This is across all the UK’s main political parties.

A well-established broadcaster, Liam Halligan appears on CNN-Talk at 12 noon GMT each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. His worldwide audience enjoys his take on topics ranging across UK, European and global economics and politics.

Liam also often appears on flagship BBC programmes such as Question Time, This Week, Any Questions, Newsnight, Daily Politics and Radio 4’s Today programme.

A former C4 News Economics Correspondent, Liam continues to research, write and present long-form documentaries for C4 flagship Dispatches strand.

His latest book Clean Brexit: How to make a success of leaving the European Union was co-authored with the leading City economist Dr Gerard Lyons. It was published by Biteback in September 2017. Liam is currently writing a book on the UK housing market.

Liam is Editor-at-Large and a shareholder of BNE-Intellinews, a leading source of English-language business, economics and political news and analysis. It covers the 30 countries in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. He writes his “Invisible Hand” column in the monthly BNE magazine.

During the 1990s, Liam was Political Correspondent at The Financial Times, based at the House of Commons. As a result, he was singled-out by the Downing Street Press Office as “impervious to spin” and “The Michael Caine of Economics”.

Eight years at C4 News saw him win a string of broadcasting awards. These included the World Leadership Forum’s Business Broadcaster of the year twice in succession. He also won the prestigious Wincott Business Broadcast Award an unprecedented three times.

Liam has also written for many magazines and journals. The Economist from Moscow, for the New Statesman, Wall Street Journal, Prospect, Euromoney. At GQ Magazine, he wrote a monthly column between 2008 and 2011. He also previously presented Wake up to Money on BBC’s Radio Five Live.

Between 2007 and 2013, he was Chief Economist at Prosperity Capital Management, an asset management company focussed on Russia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It controlled investments for a range of institutional clients from Europe, the US and the Middle East. These included pension funds, insurance companies, charities, endowments and sovereign wealth funds.

Liam was the first person in his family to go to university. Most noteworthy he has a First Class (Hons) degree in economics from the University of Warwick. He also has an M.Phil (Econ) from St Antony’s College, Oxford University. He sits on the Advisory Board of the Social Market Foundation and Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy. This is an ESRC-funded research body within the University of Warwick’s Economics Department.

Liam is a Governor of The John Lyon School, Harrow. This is the school he attended during the 1980s on a scholarship, leaving as Head Boy. A citizen of both the UK and the Republic of Ireland, he is listed in Who’s Who, De Bretts and the Dictionary of International Biography.
