Richard Dunwoody MBE
Richard Dunwoody is one of the most legendary jockeys in British history. He was at the forefront of English National Hunt racing in the 80s and 90s, and won the Big Three races: The Grand National, the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Now a motivational and after-dinner speaker, Richard Dunwoody’s speech topics range from anecdotes from the Grand National through to peak performance and how to achieve it.
About Richard Dunwoody
Richard Dunwoody is perhaps best known for his partnership with the inimitable Desert Orchid, on whom he won seven races. Over the course of his career, Richard won a record 1699 races and was even awarded an MBE in 1993 for services to his sport.
Richard Dunwoody had one of the most incredible careers and was only forced to hang up his boots at the age of 35 owing to injury.
In addition to racing, he has worked as a racing pundit for the BBC and as a sports columnist more broadly. January 2008 saw Richard complete a gruelling 680-mile, 48-day trek to the South Pole un-resupplied and on a new route, one that Shackleton intended to take back in 1915.
From May to July 2009 Richard undertook the ‘1000 Mile in 1000 hours’ Barclay Challenge which involved walking one mile in every hour for 42 days with minimal sleep throughout this period.
Richard swapped his riding boots for dancing shoes in 2009 when he took part in BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. He recounts in his autobiography ‘Method in My Madness’ how this experience was far more daunting than any race around the Aintree Grand National fences!
