Musharaf Asghar
Musharaf Asghar (aka Mushy) is a much-loved keynote speaker and journalist. You might recognise him from the fly-on-the-wall documentary series 'Educating Yorkshire' in which he delivered a heartfelt speech thanking his teachers for their help in achieving goals he never deemed capable of due to suffering from a severe stammer.
About Musharaf Asghar
As a pupil at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, Mushy suffered with a severe stammer. This was until one of his teachers, Matthew Burton, was inspired to help him after watching The King’s Speech. Using the technique employed by King George VI’s speech therapist Lionel Logue, Mr Burton suggested that Mushy read aloud whilst listening to music through headphones. In one of the most moving clips on British television, the technique worked and viewers saw Mushy get through his English GCSE oral exam and deliver a heart-wrenching end-of-term speech in front of his peers and teachers in a school assembly.
Now, having obtained a degree in Broadcast Journalism, Mushy has honed and developed his speaking skills and delivered countless inspirational speeches to audiences of all kinds, from schools and colleges to corporate audiences. As well as talking about his personal story and the power of education, Mushy is adept at talking about Mental Health Awareness and Leadership skills.
His objective for his sessions is to express in depth the power of education and how teachers are the everyday heroes students aim to find in their school life. Mushy addresses how important his own teachers were and how they can transform a young person’s life through the grit and determination they bring every day into their respective school.
Told through rap and lyrical narration, Rifco Theatre Company brought Mushy’s story to life in the production Mushy: Lyrically Speaking. This musical toured venues across the UK.

Testimonials
"From tears to laughter, we had it all! What an honour it was to have Musharaf visit Egglescliffe School and speak to our students about the incredibly empowering journey he has been on. Musharaf spoke to a mix of KS3 and KS4 students about resilience and always being the best, you can be; even when life throws challenges your way. Our students were inspired by Musharaf’s kind words, as someone who had overcome hardships to succeed."

"As a teacher, Mushy also reminds us all to never give up in young people and that every single individual in our classroom just needs one person to believe in them. I cannot recommend Mushy highly enough but be warned, you will need to bulk order tissues beforehand!"

"Having heard a number of keynote speakers over the years, I find mostly their narrative interesting, inspirational and then I return to my normal life. Mushy as a person and as a speaker was a game changer. His story of true grit and determination, refusing to give in despite being told he would never speak again, has had a lasting impact on myself and the students as we seek to live our lives through his example that no barrier is too big to overcome with dedication and determination. Mushy has a wonderful sense of humour and is able to captivate audiences across many ages through his confident, articulate style."
