Perry Power
After being sexually abused by his step-grandad at the age of 10, Perry Power lived in secrecy for over 12 years. This took him down a path of self-sabotage until the sudden death of his father in 2017. In a single moment of despair, and recognition that his own future was at stake, Perry made a decision which changed his life – he decided to break his silence. Since then his mission has been to help as many survivors as possible to also break theirs too.
About Perry Power
Writer of the best-selling book, Breaking The Silence, Perry Power co-founded We Rescue Kids (a U.S-based charity giving free mental healthcare to child survivors of sexual abuse), is a trustee for We-Together (a UK-based charity building a tool that allows victims to self-report), and runs a self-publishing company called Powerful Books, helping trauma survivors to write and publish their own book.
“Don’t you go telling anyone about this, okay? Don’t tell your mum. Don’t tell your friends at school. No one”…
Those were the words that started a 12 year silence for Perry. Just a kid who didn’t really understand the depth of what had been going on. He simply thought it was a form of love that no other family member had been giving him. But as the years passed, it became increasingly clear what Perry had been a victim of…and that was intrafamilial sexual abuse by his step-grandfather.
As an avid actor and storyteller, Perry found ways to get lost in other worlds, adept at wearing emotional masks so no one could see his real pain. Simultaneously he was trying to manage his father’s increasing dependency on alcohol alongside starting and trying to grow different businesses, with each one not succeeding.
His world fell apart at the age of 22 when his dad, who was only 48, died suddenly from a heart attack. Hitting rock bottom and fearing for his own future, Perry decided to break his silence, publicly. This lead to the discovery that his dad was a sexual abuse survivor too. Realising that his dad had lived and died in silence, Perry made it his mission to raise awareness on intrafamilial abuse and inspire survivors to break their silence.
Perry now co-runs a charity in the US and is on the board of trustees for a charity in the UK with the objective of making it easier to report abuse. He’s been featured in The Sunday Times, The Sun, and Business Insider to name just a few, given a TEDx talk, written a book that hit #1 in both the Sexual Abuse and Mental Health categories on Amazon, and runs a successful self-publishing company working with trauma survivors to help them write and publish their own book.
His speaking work has encompassed small workshop style groups, through educational training for Samaritans volunteers up to business convention presentations to hundreds of attendees.
The NSPCC estimates that 1 in 20 adults are, like Perry, survivors of child sexual abuse and while his own story focuses on this life experience, what all Perry’s presentations share is an easy and honest style and passion for telling stories that need to be told. His positive messages resonate with anyone who may have lived through many different kinds of pain and trauma and his example of how to break the silence and free yourself to find a place of strength and forgiveness is inspirational to all.
