Hari Budha Magar
Serving for 15 years in the British Army’s legendary Gurkha regiment, Hari has transformed from injured veteran to record breaking mountaineer. Hari, originally from Nepal, served across five continents with the Royal Gurkha Rifles, and in 2010, lost his legs in Afghanistan after stepping on an improvised explosive device.
About Hari Budha Magar
After this life changing event which resulted in Hari having two below-knee amputations, he made it his mission to inspire and change perceptions with regards to disability globally. And, on 19th May 2023, he realised this vision and became the first double above-knee amputee to climb Mount Everest. A feat, for which he has been awarded a Guinness World Record.
Outside of this monumental achievement, Hari seizes the opportunity to blaze new trails for people with disabilities. He has set numerous records for people with disabilities on other mountains (including Ben Nevis, Mont Blanc, Kilimanjaro, Mount Toubkal, Chulu Far East and Mera Peak), has kayaked around the Isle of Wight, completed multiple skydives, paraglided, bungee jumped and competed internationally as a para-skier and golfer, as well as also becoming the first person to reach Everest base camp with prosthetic legs in 2022.
Hari is a champion of removing limits, demonstrating resilience and innovation and showing the effects of a positive mindset. He believes having a disability doesn’t have to be life limiting, it is all about adaptation. Through his challenges, Hari wants to raise awareness of disability and positively change the way people with a disability are perceived and how they perceive themselves.
Hari has developed motivational speeches for organisations around the UK, Nepal and overseas, as well as sharing his experiences with schools, universities, and army training centres.
