About Dr. Makaziwe Mandela

Born in Johannesburg and raised in Soweto, Dr. Makaziwe Mandela is the eldest daughter of Evelyn Mase and Nelson Mandela. She completed her high school education in Swaziland and earned a BA in Social Work from Fort Hare University, followed by an Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Natal. In 1984, Dr. Maki received a Fulbright Foreign Scholarship and a Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship Award, allowing her to pursue a Masters in Sociology and a Doctorate in Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts in the US.

Dr. Maki’s diverse career spans multiple countries and includes directorships with organizations like Nestlé SA. She has played a significant role in developing an investment portfolio within Nozala, a women’s investment group focused on economic empowerment and the upliftment of South African women. Her professional experience includes roles at academic institutions both in South Africa and abroad, and she has served as Executive Manager Corporate Services at the Development Bank of Southern Africa and General Manager Human Resources at Spoornet.

Additionally, Dr. Maki has been involved with the boards of Rand Water Services, Myriad Medical, Envirosev, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. She also works as a consultant in training development and life skills at Self Empowerment International. Currently, she is the Chairperson of House of Mandela, a business founded with her daughter Tukwini Mandela in 2010, and a director of the House of Mandela Family Foundation established in 2017. The Foundation aims to improve the livelihoods of impoverished communities and advocates for social issues affecting African communities, including HIV and AIDS, education, health, agriculture, women empowerment, and promoting alternative energy sectors.

In October 2023, Dr. Maki launched her book, “Mandela,” which offers an intimate portrait of her father, Nelson Mandela. This richly illustrated volume combines historic biography and imagery with never-before-published family stories, personal photographs, letters, journal entries, and rare artworks created by Mandela at the age of 83. The book provides a unique and insightful tribute to the man behind the anti-apartheid movement that transformed the world.
