About Sir Bob Geldof

Sir Bob Geldof is a musician, businessman and humanitarian campaigner best known as the lead singer of The Boomtown Rats and the driving force behind Band Aid and Live Aid. Alongside a successful music and media career, he has spent decades campaigning on issues including poverty, famine relief and social responsibility.

Rising to fame during the punk and new wave era, Bob achieved major success with hits including Rat Trap and I Don’t Like Mondays before going on to launch a solo career, publish a bestselling autobiography and work across television, radio and journalism. He also co-founded television production company Planet 24, creators of The Big Breakfast, and communications technology company Groupcall.

In 1984, following reports of famine in Ethiopia, Sir Bob brought together some of the world’s biggest artists to record Do They Know It’s Christmas? under the name Band Aid. The following year, he organised Live Aid, one of the largest live music events ever staged, raising millions for famine relief in Africa. He later led Live 8 as part of the Make Poverty History campaign and has received numerous honours for his humanitarian work, including an honorary knighthood.
