About Michael Portillo

Michael’s political career spanned over two decades, during which he held prominent positions in government, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Employment, and Secretary of State for Defence. He was admitted to the Privy Council in 1992. Following his defeat in the 1997 General Election, Michael made a striking pivot to journalism and television. Over the years, he has been a regular presence on BBC One’s This Week, where he provided a sardonic take on politics, and Radio 4’s The Moral Maze, where he has contributed for over a decade.

Before his rise in politics, Michael earned a first-class degree in History from Peterhouse, Cambridge, and began his career at the Conservative Research Department. In 1984, he won a by-election in Enfield Southgate, a position he held until 1997, and later returned to Parliament as MP for Kensington and Chelsea. He also briefly contested the Conservative Party leadership before retiring from politics in 2005.

In addition to his political achievements, Michael has authored numerous articles and hosted various documentaries on topics ranging from politics and history to the arts. His popular series Portillo’s Progress, Art that Shook the World: Richard Wagner’s Ring, and When Michael Portillo Became a Single Mum further showcase his versatility as a broadcaster.

Today, Michael continues to comment on political and current affairs and provides expert analysis on the future of the UK, particularly in light of Brexit. With his unique insights and experience in both politics and media, Michael Portillo delivers thought-provoking speeches that resonate with diverse audiences, offering perspectives on leadership, change, and the evolving global landscape.
