About Lyse Doucet
Lyse Doucet’s career in journalism began after studying international relations in Canada. Lyse initially worked with an NGO in Africa before joining the BBC, where her first assignment was in West Africa. She later reported from Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan, covering major events such as the Soviet withdrawal. She then moved to Jordan to establish the BBC’s office in Amman, followed by a posting in Jerusalem, where she deepened her expertise in Middle Eastern affairs. Lyse has covered every significant conflict in the region since the mid-1990s, including the Arab Spring and the Syrian civil war, as well as key political events and natural disasters in Asia.
With extensive knowledge of Middle Eastern politics, commerce, and culture, Lyse is renowned for her ability to provide insightful analysis of the region’s complex and shifting dynamics. She skillfully communicates complex and emotive issues, blending humanity with analysis to focus on both significant political events and their impact on affected communities.
Lyse often draws parallels between global uncertainties and organisational risks in her discussions, offering unique perspectives. As a board member of Inter Mediate, she is involved in fostering dialogue and negotiation in some of the world’s most challenging conflicts. Lyse brings honesty, energy, and even humor to her presentations, highlighting resilience and hope in the face of adversity. She shares personal anecdotes, like taking selfies with Iraqi tribal sheikhs amidst the threat of ISIS, and maintains an optimistic outlook despite her challenging work. As a skilled host and moderator, she uses her journalistic expertise to provide attendees with fresh insights and understanding.
In addition to her reporting, Lyse has produced documentaries on Syria, Gaza, and Afghanistan. She also hosted the Radio 4 series “Her Story Made History,“ which featured interviews with influential but often overlooked women in modern politics, journalism, and activism. Her distinguished career has earned her numerous international accolades, including Emmy, Peabody, and Sony Gold awards. Lyse has been honored as a member of the Order of Canada and an OBE, and has served as a Council Member of Chatham House, a leading foreign affairs institution.
In addition to her broadcasting work, Lyse is a sought-after conference chair.
