Lee Lawrence
At the age of eleven, Lee Lawrence witnessed a life-altering tragedy when his mother, Dorothy "Cherry" Groce, was unlawfully shot by police during a raid, sparking the 1985 Brixton uprising. The incident left his mother with devastating physical injuries that led to her death in 2011. This traumatic event shaped the course of Lee's life, inspiring him to seek justice not only for his mother but for marginalised communities impacted by systemic injustice.
About Lee Lawrence
Following his mother’s passing, Lee became a determined advocate for justice, and in 2014, he spearheaded a pivotal campaign for an inquest into her death. Despite being denied legal aid initially, Lee garnered over 133,000 public signatures, successfully overturning the decision and securing legal aid. His relentless pursuit led to a full public apology and accountability from the Metropolitan Police—an achievement that marked a significant moment in the fight for justice and civil rights.
Lee’s journey of resilience and advocacy has been shared in his award-winning book, The Louder I Will Sing, which highlights his personal experiences and broader issues of injustice, systemic racism, and the power of restorative justice. Today, Lee is a renowned inspirational speaker, working with organisations, educational institutions, and communities to drive social change. He speaks passionately on topics such as cultural change, diversity and inclusion, overcoming adversity, and the importance of restorative justice.
Through his powerful storytelling and commitment to positive transformation, Lee Lawrence inspires audiences to challenge the status quo and contribute to a more equitable and just society.
