Mark Mardell

Mark Mardell has spent more than 30 years at the forefront of political journalism, reporting on many of the defining events that have shaped modern Britain, Europe and the United States.

He joined the BBC’s political unit in 1989 and went on to serve as Newsnight Political Editor, Chief Political Correspondent and later the BBC’s first Europe Editor. During this time, he covered major political developments including the fall of Margaret Thatcher, the rise of Euroscepticism, the emergence of New Labour and the road to the Iraq War.

In 2009, Mark became the BBC’s North America Editor, reporting throughout the Obama presidency and covering US politics, foreign policy and the changing political landscape across America. His work took him far beyond Washington, providing audiences with a deeper understanding of the people, issues and forces shaping the country.

Returning to the UK, Mark went on to present BBC Radio 4’s The World at One and The World This Weekend, interviewing leading politicians, policymakers and commentators while exploring the intersection between domestic and international affairs.

A gifted storyteller and insightful analyst, Mark has also produced acclaimed documentaries, including Brexit – A Love Story?, examining the complex relationship between Britain and the European Union. In 2020, he won the Association of International Broadcasters Award for news reporting for his work on race and politics in the United States.

Drawing on decades of reporting from Westminster, Brussels and Washington, Mark delivers informed, engaging and thought-provoking insights into politics, current affairs and global events.
