About Sir Christopher Meyer

Sir Christopher Meyer was one of the UK’s most distinguished diplomats, commentators and broadcasters, with a diplomatic career spanning almost four decades. Best known for serving as British Ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2003, he became a central figure in transatlantic relations during a period that included the Kosovo conflict, 9/11, the war in Afghanistan and the lead-up to the Iraq War.

His five-and-a-half years in Washington made him the longest-serving British Ambassador to the USA since the Second World War. During his tenure, Sir Christopher travelled extensively across America, delivering speeches and building relationships at the highest levels of politics, diplomacy and business during both the Clinton and George W. Bush presidencies.

Sir Christopher began his diplomatic career in the 1960s with postings in Moscow and Madrid before holding a number of senior positions within the Foreign Office and British government. He served as speechwriter to three Foreign Secretaries, Press Secretary to Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe, and later became Press Secretary and official spokesperson to Prime Minister Sir John Major.

Before his Washington appointment, he also served as British Ambassador to Germany and held senior diplomatic roles in Brussels and the former Soviet Union, developing deep expertise in European politics, international diplomacy and global affairs.

Following his retirement from diplomatic service, Sir Christopher became Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission from 2003 to 2009, where he worked to strengthen the profile and independence of the organisation.

He was also a bestselling author and broadcaster. His memoir DC Confidential, offering a candid account of life inside diplomacy and politics, became an instant bestseller upon publication in 2005. His later book, Getting Our Way: 500 Years of British Diplomacy, explored the history of British foreign policy and was accompanied by a BBC documentary series.

Alongside his writing, Sir Christopher presented television and radio documentaries for the BBC and Sky, including Networks of Power, How to Succeed at Summits and Lying Abroad. Known for his sharp analysis, dry humour and direct communication style, he remained a highly sought-after speaker and commentator on international relations, diplomacy, leadership and global politics.
