Michael Gunning is a dual-nationality international swimmer and LGBTQ+ advocate. A record-holder for Team GB and Jamaica, he champions inclusivity in sports and equal rights. Recognized on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list, he’s a public speaker, BBC contributor, and Pride House Ambassador for LA 2028. Gunning raises awareness for swimming accessibility and directed the documentary Beneath the Surface.

Michael Gunning is an acclaimed international swimmer and dual-nationality athlete who has represented both Team GB and Team Jamaica. Specialising in the 200-metre butterfly, Michael broke national records and was named Jamaica’s Sportsman of the Year in 2018 for his outstanding contributions to sport.
A trailblazer in the swimming world, Michael is one of the few mixed-race athletes in a traditionally white sport and a vocal advocate for inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights globally. His courage and authenticity were celebrated when he came out on NBC Universal’s E! Entertainment in 2018, earning him recognition as a public figure in both sport and media. Listed in the Forbes Under 30 (Europe Sport and Games – Class of 2024), Michael’s influence extends far beyond the pool.
Michael has appeared in high-profile media projects, including BBC One’s Tom Daley: Illegal to be Me documentary, and was appointed Pride House Ambassador for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the face of Speedo’s Swim United campaign since 2022, Michael has been instrumental in raising awareness about the importance of swimming lessons for children of all backgrounds. He’s even taken his message to Parliament, advocating for accessible swimming education for all.
A regular broadcaster and event host, Michael brought his expertise to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games live coverage and co-presented BBC’s Children in Need alongside Dr. Ranj to inspire audiences of all ages to embrace swimming. Holding a first-class honours degree in Early Childhood Studies, Michael combines his passion for education with his mission to create a more inclusive future.
In 2024, Michael’s storytelling talents shone when he produced, directed, and hosted his first documentary, Beneath the Surface, for Sky Sports, marking another milestone in his diverse and impactful career.
