Malcolm Castle
Malcolm Castle joined Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in March 1980 as a naïve 18 year old. He quickly realised there was an awful lot more to being a fireman than simply putting out fires. Entertaining audiences with the wacky and wonderful tales of his career, Malcolm is a hugely popular speaker.
About Malcolm Castle
Working on the scenes for everything from vehicle crashes to chemical spills and trapped people and animals, Malcolm Castle has witnessed an awful lot. He has tackled plenty of fires, from a humble litter bin to a huge industrial store the size of four football pitches!
Malcolm explores how the modern Fire Service has changed hugely in the past forty years, from the days when firefighters wore plastic leggings and gloves to go into buildings to fight fires, wearing helmets painted with inflammable paint, and boots polished with equally inflammable boot polish, to the present day when the equipment designed to protect them is absolutely, as they say, ‘fit for purpose’.
Over the years, Malcolm was involved in, or was told about, many hilarious, unbelievable, and fascinating incidents which he started collecting. These became the subject of his first talks given over thirty years ago. He then used them to create his first book ‘A Fireman’s Lift’, and subsequently his first three books of a continuing series about life in the rural fire service.
