About Gill Thomas

Gill was born with an upper limb difference and for much of her life, she didn’t see anyone else who looked like her, so she learnt to try and fit in with everyone else, to look and behave like a person with two arms. To the outside world it looked like Gill had a perfect life; she was happily married, she had a family and she excelled in her career. But on the inside Gill was afraid, and completely unaware of how small and uncomfortable she was making her life, just to avoid being seen as disabled.

In her 40s, things changed for Gill. She acknowledged that she was afraid of being seen as different, and that she needed to stop trying to conform to societal biases and assumptions. For the world to be more inclusive and kinder, then she needed to be the change that she wanted to see.

She became known to millions worldwide in 2022, when she participated in the BBC1 show, The Great British Sewing Bee. One of the first examples of representation on mainstream TV, where someone with a visible disability was included and shown to compete, but where disability wasn’t the focus or referred to. Her humour and sewing talents firmly placed Gill in the hearts of the nation, long before they learned about her inspirational story of self-acceptance, determination and how pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can lead to extraordinary things, not just for yourself, but for others too.
