About Gerald Ratner
In 1991, a speech delivered by Gerald led to what later became known as “doing a Ratner” — a phrase now widely associated with major public relations mistakes and ranked as one of the UK’s most significant business gaffes. The consequences were immediate and dramatic, wiping approximately £500 million from the company’s value and ultimately leading to Gerald stepping away from public life for seven years.
Since then, Gerald has rebuilt both his career and reputation, going on to launch two further multi-million-pound businesses in the health and leisure and jewellery sectors. His story of business success, public failure and personal recovery has made him one of the UK’s most compelling and relatable business speakers.
Gerald is the author of the widely acclaimed autobiography The Rise and Fall… and Rise Again: Gerald Ratner – My Story, in which he reflects openly on leadership, resilience, media scrutiny, risk-taking and rebuilding after adversity. His business career and contribution to British retail were also recognised when he was named among John Timpson’s Top 50 High Street Heroes.
