Chris Hines
Chris Hines is not just an environmental advocate—he’s a force of nature with over three decades of experience driving positive change. With a passion that’s infectious and a track record that’s nothing short of remarkable, Chris has spent his life campaigning for a better, more sustainable world.
About Chris Hines
As a Co-founder and Director of Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) from 1990 to 2000, Chris Hines played a pivotal role in transforming the environmental landscape. Under his leadership, SAS was hailed by the BBC as “some of the Government’s most sophisticated environmental critics,” and by The Independent as “Britain’s coolest pressure group.” His work with SAS led to significant environmental improvements, proving that dedicated activism can make a tangible difference.
Chris Hines’s journey didn’t stop there. For five years, he served as Sustainability Director at the Eden Project, where he conceived and delivered “Waste Neutral,” an early iteration of the circular economy. His efforts helped embed sustainable business practices into the core of the organisation, demonstrating that profitability and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Chris Hines’s expertise and influence have been recognised at the highest levels. He has provided evidence to the UK Parliament and the European Commission and briefed the President of the European Parliament. His voice has been sought after by media giants like BBC World Service, Panorama, and CNN, and he’s been a special advisor to the UK Minister for the Environment.
In 2008, Chris’s contributions were formally acknowledged when he was awarded an MBE for services to the environment in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. He also holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Plymouth, a testament to his outstanding impact in the field.
Chris’s ability to connect with diverse audiences is unparalleled. He has inspired and educated groups from Accenture and Comic Relief to BMW Guggenheim Future Lab, the Dutch Tax Office, and Bombay Sapphire. His insights have resonated with leaders from the National Grid, RSPCA, and even the Global Surf Cities Conference. His international engagements include talks at prestigious institutions like the International Schools in The Hague and Geneva.
Today, Chris continues to champion sustainability by collaborating with clients who share his vision for a better world. He’s a member of the BBC’s Sustainability Advisory Group, where he helps shape the future of sustainable media.
Whether it’s strategic planning, communications, leadership, or embedding sustainability into profitable business models, Chris Hines believes that business can be a powerful force for good in a challenging world.
