About Bronwen Maddox

Prior to joining Chatham House, Bronwen was Director of the Institute for Government from 2016 to 2022, where she led influential work on improving the effectiveness of UK government and public policy. Earlier in her career, she was Editor and Chief Executive of Prospect magazine, shaping national debate on politics, economics and global issues.

Bronwen brings deep journalistic expertise to the stage, having held senior roles at The Times as chief foreign commentator, foreign editor and US editor. She previously worked at the Financial Times, where she ran award-winning investigations and wrote economics editorials, giving her a rare combination of policy insight and global economic perspective.

Before becoming a journalist, Bronwen worked in the City as an investment analyst and director at Kleinwort Benson Securities, leading a highly rated team analysing global media stocks — experience that underpins her strong understanding of markets, risk and international business.

Alongside her executive role, Bronwen is an Honorary Governor of Ditchley and an Honorary Fellow of the British Academy. She is a frequent Financial Times op-ed contributor and a regular broadcaster, known for her clear, authoritative and incisive analysis.

Bronwen holds a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from St John’s College, Oxford.
