About Jonathan Males
As a former elite slalom canoeist, Jonathan represented Australia at four World Championships and won national titles, competing at the highest levels of international sport. His experiences as an athlete sparked a lifelong fascination with the psychology of performance and what enables individuals and teams to thrive in demanding environments.
Jonathan went on to build an outstanding career as a sport psychologist, working with athletes and coaches across seven Olympic Games. He has supported some of the world’s highest-performing sports organisations, including the Australian and Great Britain canoe teams, helping athletes and coaches maximise performance on the international stage. Widely recognised for his expertise in motivation, emotional regulation and performance psychology, Jonathan has become a trusted adviser to elite performers operating under intense pressure.
Alongside his work in sport, Jonathan has established himself as a respected executive coach and leadership adviser. His approach combines rigorous psychological insight with practical experience, enabling leaders to develop the mindset and behaviours required for long-term success.
Jonathan holds a first-class degree in Psychology from the University of Tasmania, completed postgraduate research in the UK and earned a PhD in Sport Psychology. He is an HCPC-registered Practitioner Psychologist, an Accredited Master Executive and Team Coach, and a trained coach supervisor through Oxford Brookes University. He is also the author of In the Flow, an acclaimed book exploring performance psychology in paddle sports, and is recognised for his work with Reversal Theory, a sophisticated framework for understanding the relationship between motivation, emotion and performance.
Today, Jonathan continues to coach, compete and contribute to the development of future generations of coaches while supporting leaders who are committed to making a meaningful difference in their organisations and communities. The 1% Difference and the ART of Performance
To an Olympian, 4th place is perhaps the worst place to finish. Tantalisingly close to the podium, but no medal to show for it. And the difference between 4th place and the podium is often less than 1%. The same applies in business – a small change in the right area can produce breakthrough results. But how do you know where to find the right 1% difference? Drawing on his experience in elite sport, Jonathan explains how the answer lies in the ART of Performance; how you Act, Relate and Think.
