About Helen Lederer

Helen Lederer is a Comedy Actress, Author, Broadcaster, great After-Dinner Speaker and popular conference and awards host and facilitator. She also presents BBC Radio 4 pick of the week and writes for newspapers and magazines. Her comedy novel ‘Losing it’ (Pan Macmillan) was nominated for the PG Wodehouse Comedy Literary award.  Helen set up the Comedy Women in Print award because she wanted to shine a light on witty women writers.

Biography

Helen Lederer began her early days at the famous Comedy Store, she has also followed on the heels of the great Julie Walters by playing Rita in ‘Educating Rita’ and spending 6 months treading the boards at the Comedy Theatre, West End in Alan Bleasdale’s ‘Having a Ball’. Helen has starred in ‘The Vagina Monologues’ in the West End, John Mortimer’s ‘Full House’ and Eugene Ionesco’s ‘The Hairless Diva’ (Palace Theatre, Watford).

From cruising down the Nile for Granada TV to co – hosting ‘Wogan’, live slots at BBC Food Show Birminham NEC and International Wine Fair EXCEL to presenting a ‘Blue Peter’ special or presenting strands for BBC’s ‘Heaven and Earth Show’ – Helen’s ease with the camera and interest in people shows her adaptability and warmth – no matter what subject is thrown at her! Presenting the cookery programme ‘Butterfingers’ for TASTE CFN received record viewing figures.

Presenting Radio 5’s ‘Comic Cuts’ including interviews with fellow comics – Ruby Wax and Harry Enfield – not to mention being a regular columnist for Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ and a fun guest on ‘Ready Steady Cook’ with slots at the BBC Food Show with chefs including Nick Nairn. She has also presented a series of musical concerts at the Wigmore Hall for young people. Helen has been involved in many TV shows including ‘French & Saunders’, ‘Jack Dee Show’, ‘Sooty’, ‘Hollyoaks’, ‘Casualty’ but most famously being dizzy journalist in BBC’s ‘Absolutely Fabulous’

Having established herself as one of Britain’s best known writer/comediennes in the 80’s, Helen was soon commissioned by Hodder and Stoughton to write ‘Single Minding’ and later by Penguin, to write her first novel.

Several commissions for BBC Radio (All Change making Pick Of The Week) and a commission for BBC TV to write a sitcom, sits well with her regular articles in ‘The Independent On Sunday’, ‘The Mail on Sunday’, ‘The Guardian’, ‘Daily Telegraph’, ‘SHE magazine’, ‘Good Housekeeping’, ‘Woman & Home’, ‘EVE’ and many others. She was also a regular reviewer on BBC ‘s ‘Open Book’ programme and ‘YOU magazine’s Book Club’ as well as having a regular column on Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’. Her short stories have been published in ‘The Daily Express’ and ‘Girls Night In’ (Harper Collins).
