About Dr Noreena Hertz

Dr Noreena Hertz is a leading political economist, a Distinguished Fellow at Cambridge and a Visiting Professor at Utrecht. As a strong advocate of ethical globalisation, she believes that Corporate Social Responsibility can deliver increased profits. She sits on the global advisory board of Citigroup, is a non-Executive director of Webber Shandwick and was the driving force behind Channel 4’s ‘MayDay for Nurses’ campaign.

Biography

Dr Noreena Hertz career started in St Petersburg, where she helped establish the city’s stock exchange and tutored Yeltsin’s advisors in market economics. After a period as a consultant at the World Bank, she turned her attention to the Middle East, heading a team of researchers exploring the role of the private sector in the peace process.  Her first book, ‘The Silent Takeover’, charted the shortcomings of the Thatcher-Reagan economic model, showing how the balance of power shifted radically from politics to commerce. Her next book, ‘IOU: The Debt Threat’ and ‘Why We Must Defuse It’, looks at the root causes behind Third World debt, poverty, terrorism and collapsing states.  Noreena regularly takes part in debates, including the World Economic Forum in Davos. She presents a case for a new business environment, in which transparency and accountability matter more to employees and customers alike.
