About Esher McVey

Esther McVey MP was born in Liverpool and fostered as a child before going on to study law in London. After graduating, she built a successful decade-long career in broadcasting, producing and presenting programmes for GMTV, Channel 5 and a range of current affairs and legal series.

In 2010, she became the first Conservative MP on Merseyside since 1997. Her political career has included serving as Deputy Chief Whip, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Cabinet Minister. She has led one of Whitehall’s largest departments, overseeing 100,000 staff, a £200bn budget and delivering significant welfare reforms and employment growth.

After losing her seat in 2015, Esther returned to Parliament in 2017 as MP for Tatton. She also founded the “Blue Collar Conservatism” movement and stood in the 2019 Conservative leadership contest.

A principled and resilient political figure, Esther resigned from Cabinet in 2018 over Brexit. Today, she is in demand as a political commentator, keynote speaker and event host, and is the author of four books on careers and role models.
