TV Presenting

Stefan Gates has written and presented 16 popular TV series, earning his place as one of the UK’s most loved and versatile presenters. His food science series Harvest (BBC2), Food Factory (BBC1), and E Numbers: An Edible Adventure (BBC2) have brought food production and nutrition to the masses. His acclaimed series Cooking in the Danger Zone (BBC2), which covered global hunger and the politics of food, ran for three seasons and further solidified his reputation for tackling important food issues.

More recently, Stefan has been at the helm of Channel 5’s Secrets of Your Supermarket Food, where he investigates the production and sale of supermarket goods. His programmes have been shown in over 50 countries, making Stefan a globally recognized figure in food television.

In the realm of children’s programming, Stefan has made waves with Incredible Edibles and Gastronuts (CBBC), where he introduces younger audiences to the science and fun behind food. His BBC4 documentaries Can Eating Insects Save the World? and Calves Heads and Coffee: The Golden Age of English Food have been widely praised for their unique perspectives and innovative storytelling.

Stefan is also a regular guest on Channel 5’s The Jeremy Vine Show and has taken on unusual food quests as a reporter on Travels with a Goat for Insight TV. With numerous awards for his television writing and presenting, Stefan is a trusted authority on all things food-related.

His interactive shows, including Fartology, Weirdology, Rude Science, and The Science of Sweets, are packed with high-energy demos, explosions, and fascinating experiments that entertain audiences of all ages.

His long-running show The Gastronaut has become a staple at live events, where Stefan takes audiences on an unforgettable scientific adventure, filled with revoltingly fun facts and myth-busting demos. Stefan’s journey into the world of food and science began after studying English at Oxford University. He initially worked in feature film and TV comedy production, but his passion for adventurous cooking and food writing soon took center stage. His bold and unconventional approach to food led him to write a book of food adventures, which caught the attention of the BBC and led to his first TV show, Full on Food (BBC2), in 2004.

Married to renowned food photographer Georgia Glynn Smith, Stefan lives in North London with their two children, where he continues to push the boundaries of food science and exploration both on and off the screen.
