About Shirley Ballas

Hailing from Wallasey in northwest England, Shirley grew up on a council estate and faced numerous challenges from an early age. Despite enduring bullying and constant criticism, she discovered her passion for dance at age seven and relentlessly pursued her dream. By 21, she had won nearly every major title in competitive dance, including being a three-time ‘British Open to the World’ Latin American Champion and a 10-time US Latin American Champion. Shirley remains the youngest female finalist in the history of the British Open to the World Championships in Blackpool, a feat that has yet to be surpassed.

As the only person to have won the British Open to the World Latin American Championships with two different partners, Shirley’s career exemplifies the power of reinvention and perseverance. After achieving immense success in the UK, she moved to the United States to rebuild her career and faced new hurdles, once again proving her doubters wrong. Now, as the head judge on Strictly Come Dancing since 2017, Shirley brings her wealth of experience and insights to audiences far beyond the world of dance.

Shirley’s talks resonate deeply with those who seek inspiration in overcoming personal and professional challenges. She speaks candidly about her struggles, including the impact of losing her brother David to suicide in 2003, a loss that ignited her passion for advocating mental health awareness. Her journey from hardship to triumph, along with her ongoing advocacy for mental wellbeing, offers invaluable lessons for organisations committed to fostering resilience, inclusivity, and emotional intelligence in the workplace.

Whether addressing themes of social mobility, the grit needed to break through barriers, or strategies for supporting mental health, Shirley’s story is a testament to rising above adversity and achieving greatness. Her talks leave a lasting impression, providing audiences with not only motivation but practical insights into overcoming obstacles and cultivating a culture of perseverance and support.
