About Shirley Ballas

Hailing from Wallasey in northwest England, Shirley grew up on a council estate and faced numerous challenges from an early age. Despite enduring bullying and constant criticism, she discovered her passion for dance at age seven and relentlessly pursued her dream. By 21, she had won nearly every major title in competitive dance, including being a three-time ‘British Open to the World’ Latin American Champion and a 10-time US Latin American Champion. Shirley remains the youngest female finalist in the history of the British Open to the World Championships in Blackpool, a feat that has yet to be surpassed.

As the only person to have won the British Open to the World Latin American Championships with two different partners, Shirley’s career exemplifies the power of reinvention and perseverance. After achieving immense success in the UK, she moved to the United States to rebuild her career and faced new hurdles, once again proving her doubters wrong. Now, as the head judge on Strictly Come Dancing since 2017, Shirley brings her wealth of experience and insights to audiences far beyond the world of dance.
