His greatest achievements were winning the Olympic 400 metres Silver Medal in 1996 and being part of the Gold Medal winning 4 x 400 metres relay team at the 1991 World Championships. He was British Men’s Team Captain and was awarded the M.B.E. in 1992.
Roger Black MBE’s most popular speech is designed to motivate a person to become more successful both as an individual and as a member of a team. All world class teams are comprised of world class individuals, so he begins by talking about how to develop the mindset of a champion by applying his ‘Five Fundamentals’ for success:
1. A desire to reach your full potential
2. A high need for achievement with low fear of failure
3. Goal setting through pro-activity
4. Set training programme – synergise
5. The ability to perform under pressure
Roger then tells the story of his career using anecdotes to demonstrate how the fundamentals were learnt. The dynamics of teamwork are described through the story of the World Championship winning 4x400m relay team of 1991 – the belief that the greater good of the team is more important than any individual ego. The speech is both thought provoking and entertaining. He shows two videos – his victory as an individual at the 1990 European Championships 400m and his victory as a team member at the 1991 World Championships 4x400m.
Whenever Roger meets clients prior to giving his presentations it always interests him that most businesses face similar motivational challenges regardless of their specific field. Whether it’s Banking, I.T., Insurance, Catering, Medical Sales or the Motor Trade the same key words keep coming up – Teamwork, Change Management, Goal Setting and the general maintenance and recruitment of a motivated workforce. It seems to Roger that the fundamentals for success change very little but the challenge for most businesses, whether large or small, is to find a way to communicate the key corporate messages in an appropriate way. If his speeches compliment or reinforce the company message then a great opportunity is created for the audience to move ahead with a shared vision.
