About Manoj Malde
Manoj’s love of colour is deeply rooted in his Indian heritage and his former career in fashion, where he spent 18 years as a creative director. With a Master’s degree in fashion design from the Royal College of Art, Manoj brings a sophisticated eye for combining textures and colours into his planting schemes. He often likens the process of garden design to fashion, using mood boards, themes, and colour palettes. His philosophy is simple: “Designing a planting scheme is like creating a beautiful silk print. I’ve gone from haute couture to ‘hort’ couture.”
In 2017, Manoj made his debut at the Chelsea Flower Show with his celebrated garden Beneath a Mexican Sky, inspired by architect Luis Barragán. Featuring vibrant pink and orange walls and drought-resistant plants, the garden earned Manoj a silver-gilt medal and cemented his reputation for creating bold, colourful designs. Since 2011, he has designed gardens for private clients and property developers, with plans to expand his portfolio to public spaces, hotels, spas, and private gardens abroad.
Manoj is best known for his work as a garden designer on BBC2’s Your Garden Made Perfect, where he helps homeowners reimagine their outdoor spaces using cutting-edge virtual technology. He is also a presenter on Garden of the Year, where he judges alongside Zoe Ball and Lachlan Rae. Manoj’s television appearances have also included Gardener’s World on BBC1, The Great Gardening Challenge on Channel 5, and Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh on ITV. He has shared his expertise on indoor plants on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio London and BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time.
Born in Kenya and moving to the UK at age four, Manoj’s designs are often inspired by his Indian heritage and his passion for travel. He explores the traditions, cultures, and landscapes of different countries, which deeply influence his garden creations. Manoj is also an advocate for diversity in gardening, aiming to inspire a wider audience, especially from ethnic backgrounds, to find joy and creativity in garden design.
With a unique background blending fashion, gardening, and media, Manoj Malde continues to inspire with his innovative designs and vibrant personality, making him a sought-after speaker for garden enthusiasts, societies, and events.
