Joe Garner

Joe Garner is the former Chief Executive of Nationwide Building Society, a position he held from 2016 to 2022. Prior to joining Nationwide, he served as CEO of Openreach, BT’s infrastructure division, from 2014 to 2016. During his tenure at Nationwide, Joe led the organisation through significant digital transformation while maintaining its mutual ethos and focus on customer service.

He introduced initiatives such as flexible working and increased support for local housing projects. Joe has been a vocal advocate for responsible business practices and purpose-riven leadership. He has served on various industry boards and committees, including UK Finance and the Financial Conduct Authority’s Practitioner Panel.

Before his role at Openreach, Joe held senior positions at HSBC and Procter & Gamble. He is known for his commitment to employee wellbeing and community engagement. Joe is a frequent speaker on topics such as ethical leadership, digital innovation in financial services, and the future of work.
