Elizabeth II – A Royal Icon
Ian photographed the late Queen from the 1980s including her historic visit to Russia in 1994 and the Czech Republic in 1996. He met her on several occasions and his book ‘The Queen: A Life in 70 Chapters’ was published in 2022. He covered her death and funeral for Sky News and misses her greatly.
“You never forgot you were in the presence of greatness” is Ian’s main recollection of photographing Queen Elizabeth. “When a world-famous person appears there is normally a surge of adrenalin, a moment of euphoria. When Elizabeth II stood before you there was often awed silence. Even her sister, Princess Margaret said “I get enormously impressed when she walks into a room. It’s a kind of magic.”
Prince Philip: A Maverick Prince
In a speech to the General Dental Council in 1960, Prince Philip admitted to suffering from ‘dontopedalogy’ – “the science of opening your mouth and putting your foot in it, a science which I have practised for a good many years.”
While he will always be remembered for his outspoken, off -the-cuff, remarks, there was more to Philip than a cranky, gaffe prone, prince.
In his book ‘The Duke: 100 Chapters in the Life of Prince Philip’, Ian writes about Philip’s traumatic childhood, the hostile reception given to him by the establishment when he courted Princess Elizabeth and his desperate unhappiness when he had to give up a promising naval career at the age of 30 in order to support the young Queen.
He overcame all of this to drag the monarchy into the modern age, embracing new developments in the media and reforming many aspects of palace life. He was by Elizabeth’s side for all her overseas tours, as well as hundreds of her UK engagements in effect making hers a joint reign.
Famous Faces: memories of a Press Photographer
Ian photographed all the senior royals from Andrew and Fergie in 1986, to the births of William and Kate’s children and most recently the Coronation. He has also met and photographed celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, Sophia Loren and Kermit the Frog and has a wealth of anecdotes as well as some great photos to show you.
Queen Victoria was Amused
Ian is the author of ‘An Audience With Queen Victoria’. Often thought of as the mournful ‘Widow of Windsor’ dressed permanently in black, she is supposed to have said “we are not amused.” – spoiler alert SHE DIDN’T. In old age she enjoyed theatricals, singing, dancing, holidaying in the Riviera and a dram of whisky. Illustrated with rare photos from Ian’s collection.
