About Dr. Shini Somara
As the driving force behind eSTEAMd Media, Dr. Somara has created a platform for socialising science through books, TV, and digital media. Her work aims to demystify the complexities of STEAM fields, transforming them into captivating content for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Through her production company, she has produced and hosted three groundbreaking podcast series, including “eSTEAMd Women,” which shines a spotlight on women in STEM, and “Innovators Making a Difference,” where she engages in meaningful conversations with STEM trailblazers.
Dr. Somara’s commitment to education and outreach is evident in her role as a mentor to Masters and Ph.D. engineering students at Imperial College London and other prestigious institutions globally. Her dedication to inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists extends to her work as an author. Dr. Somara’s seventh STEM book, “Engineers Making a Difference,” aimed at readers 11 and older, has been generously distributed to all secondary state schools in the UK, thanks to the support of Imperial College London and The Gatsby Foundation. Her books, published through Hachette and Pan Macmillan, have been translated into 10 languages, broadening the reach of her impactful message.
In addition to her work in media and education, Dr. Somara has made significant strides in advocating for diversity, equality, and inclusion within STEAM fields. Her efforts to increase participation among girls, young women, and ethnic minorities are rooted in her belief that a diverse pool of talent is essential for fostering innovation. As a keynote speaker, she has captivated audiences worldwide, including delivering a powerful speech at the United Nations HQ in 2017, where she called upon women in STEM to stand as role models.
Dr. Somara’s influence extends to her roles on the Board of Trustees of PK Porthcurno and as a panel member at English Heritage’s Blue Plaques Committee. Her contributions to the engineering community have been recognised through her appointment as an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers and her recent (Dec 2023) appointment as Pro-Vice Chancellor of Brunel University, London.
With a career that spans almost two decades in both presenting and producing content for the BBC, Channel 4, PBS Digital, Al Jazeera, Sky, and UKTV, Dr. Somara has successfully bridged the gap between complex scientific topics and the general public. Her YouTube series, “Crash Course Physics” and “Crash Course Engineering,” have collectively amassed over 61 million views.
