David Mitchell

David holds the prestigious role of Town Crier to the historic city of Chester, one of the few places in the world where the tradition of regular midday proclamations is still maintained. Dressed in his striking regency costume, he brings a touch of pageantry and theatre wherever he appears, delighting audiences with both his presence and his storytelling.

Alongside his work as a town crier, David has made numerous appearances on television and radio, and has even appeared on the big screen, playing the Town Crier in the films Moll Flanders, starring Alex Kingston, and 24 Hour Party People with Steve Coogan.

David has also taken his craft to the stage with his one-man show “For Crying Out Loud!”, which has been performed in theatres including Eastbourne and Epsom as well as in his home city of Chester. Believed to be the first theatre show ever created by a town crier, it combines history, humour and lively performance to celebrate the traditions of town crying.

Within the town crier community, David has achieved notable success. He has hosted four World Town Crier Tournaments in Chester, placed third in the World Town Crier Championship in Canada, and was crowned British Town Crier Champion in 2008. His contribution to the region has also been recognised locally, when he became the first recipient of the Chester Chronicle’s ‘Pride of Cheshire’ Award, voted for by readers.

Despite these many achievements, David’s favourite role remains that of after-dinner speaker, where he enjoys sharing the humour, traditions and surprising stories of town crying with new audiences. His talks are lively, good-humoured and always delivered in excellent taste, ensuring audiences leave with smiles on their faces and a deeper appreciation of this wonderfully British tradition.
