Tony Banks

Tony Banks is a former Parachute Regiment soldier and Founder and Chairman of Balhousie Care Group. His remarkable life story demonstrates the power of resilience and unwavering commitment to personal values.

Leaving school at 17 to study accountancy, Tony’s path changed when he joined the Territorial Army’s Parachute Regiment. Drawn by the challenge, discipline, and camaraderie, he left university to join the regular army and earn his maroon beret. Within months, he was deployed to the Falklands, where he witnessed the realities of conflict and loss, experiences that profoundly shaped his outlook on leadership and compassion.

Following his military service, Tony embarked on a series of bold career moves, from insurance sales to working as a medic on North Sea oil rigs. It was during this time that he identified a growing gap in elderly care provision and recognised the need for high-quality, compassionate residential services.

In 1991, using his savings and family support, Tony purchased his first 31-bed care home in Kirriemuir. From these modest beginnings, he built Balhousie Care Group into one of Scotland’s leading residential care providers, now operating 22 homes, supporting up to 850 residents, and employing more than 800 people.

Alongside his business success, Tony serves on the boards of the Scottish Entrepreneurial Exchange and Combat Stress, reflecting his long-standing commitment to entrepreneurship and veterans’ mental health. His achievements have been recognised through numerous awards, including Ernst & Young Scottish Entrepreneur of the Year for Customer Service.
