About Nyambe Sumbwanyambe
With nearly two decades across the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry, Yam has seen first-hand that excellence matters. Being good at what you do is a requirement for success… but for many people, it is not enough on its own.
Progression is also shaped by how well you can demonstrate your value, build the right relationships, navigate organisational dynamics, advocate for yourself, earn sponsorship and position yourself for opportunities that are rarely advertised with a clear set of instructions.
Much of that is not written down. And it is not equally easy for everyone to access.
Yam calls this the hidden curriculum of work.
His work starts from a simple reality: modern organisations are complex commercial systems, and everyone has challenges to navigate within them… but those challenges, and access to the context needed to navigate them, are not distributed equally.
Different people see different parts of the system. A senior leader may be balancing commercial pressure, culture and difficult decisions. A talented employee may be delivering exceptional work but struggling to understand why opportunities seem to pass them by. Someone with strong networks and organisational capital may navigate the same environment very differently from someone encountering its unwritten rules for the first time.
There is power in seeing those different perspectives.
When we understand not only the barriers people face, but also their pressures, hopes, motivations and aspirations, difficult workplace conversations become less about blame and more about understanding what is really happening… and what can realistically change.
Yam’s work is rooted in two truths: the systems we operate in are not always fair, and we still have agency within them.
His mission is neither to tell people to simply work harder nor to wait for organisations to solve every inequality. It is to provide the missing context that helps people see their environment more clearly, understand what they can influence and make more intentional choices about how they position themselves for opportunity.
His approach is built around clarity, confidence and community.
Clarity to understand the unwritten rules, competing perspectives and opportunities that might otherwise remain hidden.
Confidence to communicate value, advocate, build relationships and act.
Community to access conversations, connections and shared intelligence beyond our own experience.
That philosophy is personal. Despite building a successful career, it took Yam almost ten years inside one organisation to fully recognise his capability and understand how careers really moved. His work today is about helping others access that context earlier… while helping leaders and organisations see talent, challenges and opportunity from perspectives beyond their own.
Through The 29k Club, Yam has built a professional development community for ambitious people across life sciences, combining expert-led masterclasses, group mentoring and honest conversations about the realities of work. It gives him continuous proximity to the challenges, hopes and aspirations professionals are navigating right now… from progression and leadership to confidence, organisational change and the unwritten dynamics of work.
That proximity gives Yam a distinctive source of insight: he hears what people are experiencing while they are experiencing it. It allows him to spot recurring patterns, connect perspectives across different levels of organisations and bring current, human insight into conversations about talent, culture, leadership and performance.
Practical, provocative and deeply human, Yam challenges individuals to take greater ownership of how they position themselves for opportunity, while challenging leaders and organisations to make opportunity less dependent on invisible rules and accidental access.
His message is ultimately an empowering one:
Excellence matters. Context matters too. And context is not equally distributed.
You cannot navigate what you cannot see. When we make more of that context visible, we build clarity, strengthen confidence, create community and increase people’s ability to act with greater agency.

Making the Invisible Visible: How Leaders Unlock More Talent
Some of the biggest barriers to performance and progression are the hardest to see. Yam explores how culture, assumptions, access and organisational dynamics shape people’s experience of work… helping leaders spot what they may be missing and create better conditions for talent to thrive.
From Pipeline to Progression: Turning Diverse Talent Into Lasting Impact
Recruiting talented people is only the beginning. Yam explores why representation does not automatically lead to retention, progression or leadership, and how context, feedback, sponsorship, advocacy and community can help organisations convert talent pipelines into real career movement.
Career Ownership in Uncertain Times: Building Agency Through Change
AI, restructuring and shifting expectations are making careers less predictable. Yam helps people focus on what they can influence, build greater career optionality and strengthen the relationships, confidence and capabilities needed to navigate change without waiting for certainty.
Community as a Talent Strategy: Why Learning Alone Is Not Enough
Organisations have never invested more in learning, yet much of what helps people progress is still learned informally. Drawing on The 29k Club, Yam shows how community, peer intelligence and honest conversation can accelerate development, strengthen connection and make valuable workplace context easier to access.
Leadership Without All the Answers: Leading Through Complexity and Change
Today’s leaders are expected to navigate performance, culture, change, difference and uncertainty… often without a perfect answer. Yam explores how curiosity, courage and honest communication can help leaders handle difficult conversations, build trust and lead effectively when the path forward is not obvious.
