About JJ Chalmers

JJ Chalmers is a familiar face on our television screens and an inspirational voice for perseverance and positivity, JJ has built an extraordinary career in broadcasting after overcoming life-changing challenges few could imagine.

JJ began his professional life in the elite ranks of the Royal Marines Commando. Known for their rigorous training and unwavering commitment, the Royal Marines represent the pinnacle of military excellence, and JJ proudly served on the front line in Afghanistan. However, in 2011, JJ’s military career was cut tragically short when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated while he was on patrol. The explosion left him with devastating injuries including the loss of two fingers, severe leg injuries, facial damage and arm reconstruction. What followed was a long and gruelling period of rehabilitation.

While many might have allowed such life-altering injuries to define them, JJ was determined to forge a new path. Refusing to be limited by his circumstances, JJ channelled his competitive spirit into sport, becoming a key member of the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014. As Captain of the Trike Cycling team, JJ not only led by example but also secured three medals. His role as a spokesperson for the Games introduced him to the world of media, and it was during these early appearances that JJ discovered a passion for broadcasting.

Taking his natural enthusiasm and ability to connect with audiences into a new career, JJ hit the ground running in 2016 as a Studio Presenter for the Rio Paralympics on BBC. He impressed both viewers and producers with his warmth, authenticity, and insightful commentary. From there, his broadcasting career flourished. Since 2017, JJ has anchored the BBC’s coverage of the Invictus Games, an event that remains incredibly close to his heart. His experience as a competitor brings a unique depth and empathy to his presenting that resonates with audiences nationwide.

JJ’s talents quickly saw him become a key member of the BBC’s sports team. He has fronted coverage of some of the UK’s most iconic sporting events including The Commonwealth Games, The London Marathon, and The Great North Run. Beyond sport, JJ has also played an integral role in the BBC’s ceremonial programming, providing commentary for national events such as The Lord Mayor’s Show, D-Day commemorations, Trooping The Colour, the funeral of The Duke of Edinburgh, Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral, and the historic Coronation coverage.

His versatility as a presenter is evident in his wide-ranging credits. From appearing on BBC’s The One Show and fronting The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, to starring in Pilgrimage and The People Remember, JJ’s ability to engage and inspire is unmatched. His documentary From Helmand and Back for BBC Radio 5 Live earned acclaim for its honest exploration of the realities faced by veterans.

In 2020, JJ endeared himself to millions when he joined the cast of Strictly Come Dancing, wowing audiences with his determination and skill as he danced his way to the quarter finals. Proving that he is just as comfortable in a workshop as on a dancefloor, JJ has also showcased his creativity and craftsmanship on BBC’s Money for Nothing, where he breathed new life into discarded items through design and upcycling.

JJ continues to work with both the BBC and Channel 4 as part of their Olympic and Paralympic presenting teams, bringing inspiring stories and sporting achievements to life for viewers at home. His broadcasting range extends even further, having fronted the Channel 5 series Dunkirk, provided coverage of The Chelsea Flower Show, and most recently hosting Warship: Life In The Royal Navy, a remarkable three-part series offering unprecedented access to life aboard a Royal Navy vessel.

JJ is also the voice behind Beyond Bombs, a powerful podcast series for The Halo Trust, and has presented The Travelling Auctioneers, a hit BBC series combining storytelling and discovery.

With lived experience of trauma, rehabilitation, and redefining success on his own terms, JJ is a truly inspirational keynote speaker. His talks on overcoming adversity, resilience, leadership and navigating change are as relevant in the boardroom as they are in everyday life. Blending military discipline with human vulnerability, JJ shares his powerful story with humour, heart, and authenticity.

Whether delivering a keynote, hosting an event, or inspiring teams to embrace change and push beyond their perceived limits, JJ Chalmers is a speaker who leaves a lasting impact.
