About Dame Inga Beala

Dame Inga Beale is a distinguished British businesswoman with over three decades of experience in the financial services sector. Best known for her tenure as the first female CEO of Lloyd’s of London from 2013 to 2018, Inga led the global insurance market through a dramatic period of modernization. Her pioneering efforts included the launch of the Lloyd’s Innovation Lab, expanding the company’s global reach, and challenging the ‘old boys’ club’ image of the 330-year-old institution.

Before joining Lloyd’s, Inga held various international leadership positions. She began her career in 1982 with Prudential, training as an underwriter specializing in international treaty reinsurance. In 1992, she joined General Electric’s insurance division, rising to a central management position by 2001. Her career continued with a significant role at Swiss reinsurer Converium, where she led a major turnaround of the business before its acquisition by SCOR in 2007. Inga then joined Zurich Insurance Group’s Global Management Board and later became Group CEO of Canopius, a leading insurer in the Lloyd’s market.

During her time at Lloyd’s, Inga developed a culture of innovation and inclusion, expanding the company’s presence in high-growth markets such as Asia and the Middle East, and delivering some of Lloyd’s strongest financial results. As the first female CEO of Lloyd’s, she played a crucial role in changing cultural perceptions and highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion. Under her leadership, Lloyd’s launched several diversity initiatives, including the Dive In Festival, which has grown to become the only worldwide insurance industry diversity and inclusion event.

Inga’s influence extends beyond her executive roles. She is a Patron of Insuring Women’s Futures, an alliance aimed at improving women’s long-term financial resilience. Additionally, she is a member of Stonewall’s Development Council and has served on various boards, including the UK Chartered Insurance Institute, the Geneva Association, and the UK Government’s Financial Services Trade and Investment Board. She also sits on the London First Board and the London Mayor’s Business Advisory Board.

In recognition of her significant contributions to the business world, Inga was awarded a Damehood for her work in driving the inclusion agenda for women and the LGBT community. She was the first woman and bisexual person to be named on the Outstanding & FT Leading LGBT Executive Power List, underscoring her impact on the industry.

Currently, Inga continues to be an influential figure in business through her roles as Chair of Mediclinic, Non-Executive Director of Crawford & Company, and Board Member at Clyde & Co. She is a highly sought-after speaker, known for her compelling talks on leadership, cultural change, and inclusivity in the workplace. Drawing on her extensive experience, Inga provides valuable insights into balancing tradition with innovation, breaking glass ceilings, and fostering inclusive environments within organizations.
