About Sir Steve Redgrave
On September 23, 2000, Sir Steve Redgrave secured his place in Olympic history by winning his fifth gold medal at the Sydney Games, a feat unprecedented in the annals of Olympic endurance. His victories span five successive Olympic Games—Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, and Sydney—cementing his legacy as one of the greatest Olympians of all time. IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch hailed him as reaching the “highest rank of Olympic participants.”
Even before his triumph in Sydney, Sir Steve was already recognised as Britain’s most successful Olympian and the world’s greatest oarsman. Alongside his Olympic achievements, he has an impressive record of nine World Championship gold medals, including an unbeaten streak from 1993 to 1996 with his rowing partner Matthew Pinsent. Their accolades include breaking the world record in Coxless Pairs in 1994 and the Olympic record in 1996.
Sir Steve’s other sporting interests include golf and winter sports, and he was even a member of the British Bobsleigh Team during the 1989/90 season. His remarkable athletic career is even more inspiring given his battles with serious illnesses, including colitis and diabetes, which he continues to manage.
Knighted in the New Year’s Honours List 2000, Sir Steve also holds an MBE and a CBE. He has received honorary degrees from numerous universities, including Durham, Oxford Brookes, Loughborough, Hull, Buckingham, and the Open University. He served as Vice-President of the British Olympic Association and President of British Rowing, and is an Honorary Vice-President of Diabetes UK.
Since retiring from competitive rowing, Sir Steve has become a prominent public figure, ideal for product endorsements and a popular keynote and motivational speaker. In 2001, he founded the Steve Redgrave Trust, raising over £5 million for children’s charities, and later established the Steve Redgrave Fund, which became part of the Comic Relief family.
A prolific author, Sir Steve has published six books, including his biography “A Golden Age,” “You Can Win at Life,” “Enduring Success,” “Great Olympic Moments,” “The Complete Book of Rowing,” and “Inspired.”
Sir Steve also played a crucial role in setting up Sport Relief, working alongside Comic Relief to tackle poverty and social injustice. His commitment to sports and humanitarian causes was instrumental in securing the support of the Mayor of London and the Government for the London 2012 Olympic bid. He served as a Legacy Ambassador, promoting the Human Legacy of the Games, and was honored as a torchbearer, culminating in his iconic role in the 2012 Olympic torch relay.
With his extraordinary achievements and dedication to philanthropy, Sir Steve Redgrave continues to inspire audiences worldwide, sharing his journey of endurance, perseverance, and success.
