About Sir Lenny Henry CBE
Sir Lenny Henry is one of the UK’s most recognisable and respected entertainers, with a career spanning more than four decades across television, comedy, theatre, writing and charitable work. Known for his warmth, humour and versatility, he has evolved from a beloved comedy performer into an acclaimed actor, writer and leading advocate for diversity in the arts.
Lenny first rose to prominence through television and comedy before establishing himself as a highly accomplished dramatic actor. His screen credits include The Witcher: Blood Origin, Rings of Power, Broadchurch, The Syndicate and the autobiographical film Danny and The Human Zoo. On stage, he has received critical acclaim for performances in productions including The Comedy of Errors at the National Theatre, Fences in the West End and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at the Donmar Warehouse.
Alongside his acting career, Lenny is widely recognised as the co-founder and long-standing public face of Comic Relief, helping the charity raise more than £1 billion since its launch in 1985. His work in charity and advocacy has made him one of the UK’s most influential voices on representation, inclusion and social impact.
A passionate campaigner for diversity within the media and creative industries, Lenny founded the Centre for Media Diversity at Birmingham City University, has written extensively on representation in the arts, and co-hosted the podcast Black British Lives Matter. In recognition of his services to drama and charity, he was knighted in 2015.
Lenny is also an accomplished writer, having published memoirs with Faber alongside a successful series of children’s books. In 2023, his ITV drama Three Little Birds received widespread critical acclaim, while his one-man stage show August in England earned five-star reviews for both writing and performance.
