About Niall Downey
Niall’s career began as an international cyclist, competing at an elite level while studying medicine in Dublin. The discipline of elite sport taught him the importance of resilience, preparation, teamwork and marginal gains – lessons that would underpin every stage of his professional career.
After qualifying as a doctor, he specialised in cardiothoracic surgery, working in one of healthcare’s most technically demanding and high-pressure disciplines. There he witnessed first-hand how communication, decision-making and teamwork can be the difference between success and failure, and how seemingly small errors can rapidly escalate if systems are not designed to anticipate and manage them.
At the age of 30, Niall made the remarkable decision to retrain as an airline pilot. He went on to spend 27 years flying with Aer Lingus, ultimately becoming a long-haul Captain on the Airbus A330 fleet. During his aviation career, he was immersed in the principles of Human Factors and Crew Resource Management (CRM)—the practices that have helped make commercial aviation one of the safest industries in the world. For six years he even combined flying with regular shifts in an Emergency Department, giving him a unique perspective on how different industries manage risk, complexity and human performance.
Today, Niall combines insights from elite sport, surgery and aviation to help organisations navigate an increasingly complex world. His keynote presentations challenge traditional thinking around performance by demonstrating that high-performing organisations do not eliminate human error – they design systems that expect it, manage it and learn from it.
Using compelling stories from the cockpit, the operating theatre and elite competition, Niall explores why today’s organisations are attempting to solve 21st-century problems with brains that evolved for survival thousands of years ago. He explains how cognitive overload, communication breakdowns and flawed decision-making affect every workplace, and how the principles that transformed aviation safety can be applied to leadership, culture, innovation and operational performance across any sector.
Niall is a recognised authority on Human Factors, error management and high-performance culture. His practical, evidence-based approach equips leaders with the tools to build resilient teams, improve collaboration, strengthen decision-making and create psychologically safe environments where people perform at their best, even under pressure.
His engaging and thought-provoking keynotes leave audiences with practical strategies that improve organisational performance, enhance employee wellbeing and ultimately create a sustainable competitive advantage.

Navigating a 21st Century Environment with a Brain Running on Caveman Software
Our brains evolved for survival, not the complexities of today’s fast-paced world. Drawing on lessons from elite sport, medicine and aviation, Niall explains why human error is inevitable and how organisations can improve performance by designing systems that better support decision-making, reduce mistakes and build resilience.
Error is Inevitable, Poor Outcomes are Optional. Lessons from the Flightdeck.
Mistakes are part of being human, but poor outcomes don’t have to be. Niall explores how aviation’s world-leading approach to human factors, decision-making and error management can be applied across industries to improve safety, performance, teamwork and organisational results.
Flying on Autopilot – And Why it’s a Bad Idea.
Much of our thinking happens on subconscious “autopilot”, leading to flawed decisions, increased stress and avoidable errors. Niall reveals how aviation overcomes these cognitive pitfalls and shares practical techniques that help organisations make better decisions, improve collaboration and achieve consistently higher performance.
Client Feedback
"Niall you have been by far the most inspirational speaker I have heard."
"This was genuinely mind blowing. I will definitely share this with my organisation."
"Great presentation. I particularly liked the constant feedback loop used in the aviation industry. I feel we are so pressured in the NHS that this often gets overlooked."
"I have already recommended your book and hope your position with DoH will be the beginning of much needed change. Best of luck!"
"Awesome, I liked the plain speaking and this made me pay attention and take note of how I could improve my practice and that of my colleagues, staff."
"I think we need more hard truths like this! 'You see checklists as bureaucracy not safety nets' absolutely spot on!! Loved the presentation, blunt facts and use of humour."
"Sessions really builds on PSIRF and human factors, a vastly different way of thinking, which is fantastic."
"Brilliant course! The videos were particularly engaging and really illustrated your points."
"Brilliant talk! Thank you for opening up our minds. Loving the book."
