About Michael Howard

Lord Michael Howard is a distinguished politician, lawyer and public speaker whose career has spanned some of the most significant periods in recent British political history.

Before entering Parliament, Michael built a successful legal career, specialising in planning law and becoming a Queen’s Counsel in 1982. The following year he was elected MP for Folkestone and Hythe, beginning a political career that would see him hold some of the most senior positions in government.

His ministerial roles included Minister for the City, Secretary of State for Employment, Secretary of State for the Environment and, most notably, Home Secretary from 1993 to 1997. During his time in government, he played a key role in major policy debates and was involved in international negotiations, including securing support for the Climate Change Convention that preceded the Kyoto Agreement.

Following the 1997 General Election, Michael served as Shadow Foreign Secretary and later Shadow Chancellor before being elected unopposed as Leader of the Conservative Party in 2003. As Leader of the Opposition, he became known for his memorable exchanges with Tony Blair and was named Parliamentarian of the Year.

After stepping down as party leader following the 2005 Election, he continued to serve in Parliament before entering the House of Lords as a Life Peer in 2010. Alongside his political work, he has chaired Hospice UK and developed a particular interest in Winston Churchill, transatlantic relations and contemporary international affairs.

An authoritative and engaging speaker, Michael combines political insight, historical perspective and first-hand experience of government to deliver thought-provoking keynote speeches and entertaining after-dinner addresses.
