About Maxine Mawhinney

Maxine Mawhinney is one of the UK’s most respected broadcasters, with a career that has taken her from Belfast to Washington, Tokyo and some of the world’s biggest news stories.

Beginning her career in Northern Ireland, Maxine went on to work for UTV, ITN and Sky News before becoming Ireland Correspondent during a pivotal period of The Troubles. Her reporting covered both the political developments and human stories that shaped modern Ireland.

Her international career continued as Asian News Editor for Reuters TV in Tokyo, where she reported on major events across the region, including elections, international crises and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. She later moved to Washington DC as GMTV’s US Correspondent, covering stories including the Clinton presidency, the Waco siege, the Oklahoma bombing and the OJ Simpson trial.

Returning to the BBC in 1996, Maxine became one of the corporation’s most recognisable news presenters. She anchored global coverage of major world events, including the night of Princess Diana’s death, and went on to become a leading presenter on BBC News, BBC World and Dateline London.

Alongside her broadcasting career, Maxine has played a significant role in developing future journalists, serving as a leading trainer for the BBC College of Journalism and working with broadcasters across Europe. She currently hosts her own interview programme, The Moment with Maxine Mawhinney, and serves on the senior faculty of the Karolinska Institute University Hospital in Stockholm, delivering leadership and communications training.
