About Elsa Sotiriadis
Elsa holds an international PhD in synthetic biology from Imperial College London and Hong Kong University, where she founded a pioneering “cancer moonshot” project focused on programmable DNA as anticancer agents. Her research journey has taken her from Imperial College London to Harvard University and ETH Zurich, exploring areas including bio-robots, chaos theory and next-generation medical technologies.
Alongside her scientific work, Elsa has worked in finance in London, analysed emerging technologies in Vienna, and advised governments and organisations on how disruptive innovations such as artificial intelligence, robotics, synthetic biology and zero-carbon smart cities are reshaping industries and society. She is currently a director and chief futurist at global venture capital firm SOSV, where she helps accelerate breakthrough deep science startups focused on medicine, food, energy and sustainability.
A highly engaging and imaginative speaker, Elsa is known for delivering interactive keynote experiences that bring future technologies to life. In one notable presentation, she became a “cyborg” live on stage to conduct a genomic orchestra through hand movements alone. Combining scientific depth with creativity and storytelling, she explores the opportunities and ethical questions surrounding emerging technologies in an accessible and thought-provoking way.
In addition to her work in science and technology, Elsa is also an accomplished science fiction writer and poet, with one of her works becoming a UK Amazon Top 10 bestseller. Her work has been featured in publications including Singularity Hub, and she has received multiple awards from organisations including MIT and the Swiss Academy of Sciences.
