About Adam Peaty OBE

Olympic Champion Adam Peaty OBE is the only swimmer in history to hold all major global championships at the same time and the only British swimmer to ever retain their Olympic title. He holds 17 of the top 20 fastest times for the 100m breaststroke and has broken that World Record 14 times.

Adam’s first major success came aged 19, where he was the break-out star at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, winning Gold for England in the 100m breaststroke and Medley Relay, followed by a Silver in the 50m.

Adam’s emergence on the world stage continued at the Berlin 2014 European Championships, winning Gold in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke and the 4x100m Mixed Medley and 4x100m Medley Relay. A sign of things to come, Adam’s dominant 50m Gold saw him set a new World Record of 26.62 seconds in the 50m. His overall haul of four Gold medals was a driving force behind Team GB’s best European performance in history.

Following a stellar 2014 Adam’s phenomenal form continued at the 2015 British Championships, setting his second individual World Record in the 100m with a time of 57.92 seconds, the first man to ever go under 58. This dominance continued at the 2015 Kazan World Championships in August where Adam set yet another a new World Record in the 50m, posting a time of 26.42s. His powerhouse performance saw him become the first British swimmer to win three Gold medals at a single event and the first man in World Championship history to clinch the 50m and 100m Breaststroke double.

At the 2016 European Championships in London, Adam successfully defended his titles to win four more Gold medals in the 50m and 100m Breaststroke and the 4x100m Mixed Medley and 4x100m Medley Relay.

Three months later at the Olympic Games in Rio, Adam made history when he became Olympic champion in the 100m Breaststroke, winning GB’s first medal of Rio 2016 and smashing his own world record in the process with a time of 57.13 seconds. On the final night of competition in Rio, Adam raced to a Silver medal in the 4x100m Medley Relay – with the fastest Breaststroke split in history of 56.59s.

Adam’s contribution to British Swimming’s best ever Olympics since 1908 led to him receiving an MBE as part of the 2016 New Year’s Honours List.

2017 was a similarly outstanding year for Adam, competing as far afield as Indianapolis to Tokyo and culminating in the FINA World Championships in July, where he won Gold in the 100m, 50m and Mixed Medley. Posting a time of 25.95 seconds, the 50m semi-final also saw Adam become the first man to complete the course in under 26 seconds while once again breaking his own World Record.

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games saw Adam successfully defend his 100-metre breaststroke title, setting a Games record time of 58.84 seconds during the semi-final. Adam further added to his medal tally by claiming a silver in both the 50-metre breaststroke and the 4×100 metre Medley Relay.

This success continued at the European Championships, with Adam taking home 4 gold medals and breaking his 11th world record with a time of 57.10 seconds in the 100-metre breaststroke. His phenomenal accomplishments meant that he became the first ever British three-time quadruple champion.

In 2019 Adam launched AP Race Clinics with a vision to revolutionise swim clinics by teaching young swimmers how to race. Touring the UK the clinics provide people with the tools to improve their swimming techniques, land work and the mental side of racing.

Adam added to his tally of World Championship gold medals in Gwangju in 2019, as he defended his 50m and 100m Breaststroke double – breaking his own world-record in the latter event in the semi-finals by setting a time of 56.88. He also played his part in the Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay victory and claimed bronze in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay.

The inaugural season of the International Swimming League launched in 2019 with Adam being team captain for the London Roar and a key spokesperson for the ground-breaking new event. Throughout the season Adam dominated the breaststroke and helped drive his team to second place in the grand final.

Despite the challenges of 2020 Adam maintained his tenacity and drive to improve; the ISL in Budapest saw him break the 100m Short Course World Record twice in the space of as many weeks, once more showing the world that his only competition is himself.

Continuing to showcase his dominance Adam swam a rapid time of 57:29 in the 100m Breaststroke at the 2021 British Swimming Trials giving him the 20 fastest times in this event ever and a month later he claimed 4 gold medals at the 2021 European Championships in the 50m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke, Men’s 4×100 Medley Relay and Mixed 4 x 100 Medley Relay, continuing to go from strength to strength.

Adam headed into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as the firm favourite in the men’s 100m breaststroke, and for good reason. He became the first British swimmer in history to retain his Olympic title, he formed part of the mixed medley team who won gold and broke the World Record in the process and he also won silver in the men’s medley relay.

Taking a break from the water post Olympics, Adam kept himself busy as he took on a new challenge in the form of Strictly Come Dancing and released his debut book ‘The Gladiator Mindset’ in November 2021.

Deservedly, Adam was awarded an OBE in the 2022 New Years honours list for services to swimming and services to mental health.

The start of 2022 saw Adam return to the pool and in May, he suffered his first injury with a broken metatarsal. Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was on the horizon and the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd kept Adam determined to be part of the action, despite having a limited recovery window. He was unable to retain his 100m title but came back 2 days later to win gold in the 50m breaststroke, the only major gold he had not previously attained, and so completed his collection for every major breaststroke title.

At the end of the year, Adam took some time away from the pool and the hard training routine he had been immersed in for 10 years to prioritise his mental health. He focussed on his well-being and reignited his love for the sport, eventually making his comeback to international competition at The World Cups in October 2023.

Feeling more balanced and with a new drive for success, at the British Olympic Trials in April 2024, Adam swam his fastest time since 2019. More significantly, this was the fastest time in the World this year. Rejuvenated, Adam headed to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in good stead and secured a silver medal in one of the tightest races of the competition, with just 0.02 seconds between him and the gold medal time. A phenomenal achievement, his pride and humility shone through in his post race media interviews and embrace with his son. Adam has changed the perception of what it means to win.

With an abundance of medals and World Records to his name, Adam continues to dominate the field of men’s breaststroke and inspire the next generation, cementing a legacy for himself and swimming.
