Nicky Morgan - The Rt Hon. The Baroness Morgan of Cotes is an impressive speaker on education, financial services, BREXIT, digital tech, the arts and media. The member of parliament for Loughborough for nine years,  Nicky Morgan - The Rt Hon. The Baroness Morgan of Cotes formerly stood down in November 2019. Twice a Cabinet Minister, she served under both David Cameron and Boris Johnson.

About Nicky Morgan

Nicky Morgan worked at the heart of the UK government during one of its most important political and economic periods. As a Cabinet Minister she was responsible for Education, Women and Equalities, and Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Furthermore, she had previously worked at the Treasury, as Economic, then Financial Secretary.

Biography

Nicky Morgan, between 2017 and 2019, was also elected by MPs on all sides of the Commons to be the chair of the highly influential House of Commons Treasury Select Committee. The first female to undertake the role.

In her most recent time in the Cabinet was as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.  Nicky oversaw development of the Government’s digital strategy including the rollout of faster broadband and mobile connectivity.  She also worked on tackling online harms, the development of a youth investment fund. Moreover she was heavily involved in the preparations for Brexit, with or without a deal.

As Secretary of State for Education,  Nicky oversaw the publication of the 2016 Education White Paper, Educational Excellence Everywhere.  She also was responsible for the setting up of the Careers & Enterprise Company and the first Department for Education Character Awards. Likewise, she ensured there was specific ministerial responsibility, within education, for children’s mental health.

In 2017 she published her book.  In it she focused on how to educate pupils and staff at schools about resilience, self-control, tenacity, self-belief and other character attributes and values.

As Minister for Women and Equalities, Nicky led work by the Government Equalities Office on the introduction of the gender pay gap regulations.  This also involved encouraging more women on the boards of listed companies.  And it produced policies to address transphobic, biphobic and homophobic bullying in schools.

Prior to this she was a Government Whip in the Coalition Government.  Nicky was also a member of the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee and appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Universities Minister.

Nicky was originally elected as the Member of Parliament for the Loughborough constituency in 2010 and was re-elected in 2015 and 2017 before deciding not to stand in the 2019 election.

She studied Law at Oxford University and spent 16 years as a solicitor in the City of London. Here she mainly worked in corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. She trained at Theodore Goddard, spent almost 5 years at Allen & Overy and then worked as a professional support lawyer at Travers Smith.

Nicky and her husband have one son and enjoys nothing more than a nice, long, run.  She completed the London Marathon in 2013 – being beaten by Ed Balls by 13 seconds!  She is a founding director of the Loughborough Wellbeing Café Project which supports adults facing mental health challenges.
