Amber Butchart

Amber’s exhibitions examine the influence of textiles on history and society, with projects such as The Fabric of Democracy exploring the role of fashion and textiles in political movements from the French Revolution to Brexit.

Amber is also a familiar face on television and radio. She is the history consultant and resident historian on BBC One’s The Great British Sewing Bee, where she shares the remarkable stories behind historical garments and craftsmanship. She also researched and presented the acclaimed BBC series A Stitch in Time, which combined art, biography and fashion history to uncover the lives of iconic historical figures through the clothes they wore.

An accomplished author and sought-after commentator, Amber has written five books on the history and culture of clothing and contributes regularly to publications including The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC Culture, Frieze, ArtReview and The World of Interiors. Her work combines rigorous historical research with engaging storytelling, making complex cultural subjects both accessible and compelling.

Alongside her broadcasting and writing, Amber is a PhD researcher at the University of Essex’s Centre for Curatorial Studies and teaches cultural and historical studies at the London College of Fashion. She lectures internationally on fashion history, design and visual culture, and has also worked as Lead Consultant in Forensic Garment Analysis, advising on criminal investigations involving clothing and textiles.
