About Heather Frederiksen
Later that year, a devastating accident left Heather with limited use of her right arm and leg and reliant on a wheelchair. Told by doctors she would never swim again, she refused to accept the limitations placed upon her. Inspired while watching the Commonwealth Games on television, Heather made the extraordinary decision to return to the sport she loved — a decision that would lead her all the way to Paralympic glory.
Heather went on to become a multiple world record holder in the S8 classification across freestyle and backstroke events, holding world, European and British records throughout her career. At the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games she won four medals, including Gold in the 100m Backstroke where she broke the world record. She returned to the podium again at London 2012, winning further Gold, Silver and relay medals in front of a home crowd.
Today, Heather is a sought-after motivational speaker who shares her remarkable story of resilience, determination and mental strength. Drawing on her experiences of rebuilding her life and career after catastrophic injury, she speaks powerfully about overcoming adversity, adapting to change, maintaining focus under pressure and achieving success against the odds.
