About Russell Watson
Russell Watson is one of the UK’s most successful classical recording artists, known worldwide for his extraordinary voice and inspiring personal story. Rising from humble beginnings in Salford to international acclaim, Russell has built a remarkable career.
Before fame, Russell worked 12-hour nightshifts in a nuts-and-bolts factory alongside his father while pursuing his passion for music in working men’s clubs across the North West. His fortunes changed after winning a local radio talent competition against hundreds of contestants, giving him the confidence to pursue singing professionally. His breakthrough moment came in 1999 when he performed Nessun Dorma at Old Trafford before Manchester United’s Premiership-winning match, receiving a standing ovation and catapulting him into the national spotlight.
Russell released his debut album The Voice in 2000 to huge commercial and critical success. The album topped classical charts worldwide and was followed by a string of successful releases including Encore, Reprise and The Ultimate Collection, earning multiple Classical BRIT Awards and making Russell the first British male artist to top both UK and US classical charts simultaneously. Alongside his recording success, Russell has collaborated with stars including Meat Loaf, Lionel Richie, Sir Paul McCartney, Lulu and Luciano Pavarotti. He has also performed at some of the world’s most prestigious events, including the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, concerts at Windsor Castle and numerous high-profile sporting occasions. His work led to him becoming an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust at the request of King Charles III.
Russell’s story is one of resilience and determination. After facing serious health challenges, including surgery on his vocal cords and treatment for a pituitary tumour and brain tumour regrowth, he returned to music with renewed purpose and perspective, inspiring audiences through his honesty and optimism. His journey has resonated with millions and added powerful depth to his work as a speaker and performer.
Today, Russell is a popular live performer, host and speaker, sharing insights on perseverance, mindset, resilience and reinvention alongside stories from an extraordinary life in music and entertainment.
