About Mike Ainsworth

Mike has had an impressive and varied career.  In the Prison Service he started as an officer in HMP Lincoln. He then went on to run the lifer unit in Wormwood Scrubs. After that he became Deputy Governor in HMP Holloway.

Subsequently Mike went onto work in Kosovo. He did this during and immediately after the conflict. During this time he was responsible for organizing the evacuation of refugees. Likewise he was also responsible for organizing the work of forensic teams investigating war crimes.

On returning to the UK Mike worked in a variety of voluntary sector organizations including Director of Offender Services in The Princes Trust.

As Chair of both the UK Government’s and the National Police Chief’s Independent Advisory Groups on Hate Crime, Mike works with many groups.  They groups include victims, activists, lawyers and academics. Its role is to advise government, police and other offices of the criminal justice system on strategies to eradicate hate crime. And most importantly, the harm it causes to individuals and society.

Recently Mike spent a number of years working with local and national criminal justice organizations looking to eradicate the underlying causes of race disproportionality.  He is the Director of London Services for Stop Hate UK.

A member of the Executive Board of the UK Council for Internet Safety Mike covers all aspects of Hate Crimes.  He shares his knowledge of how hate crime evolves and how it can be combatted including community cohesion and youth engagement.  Moreover the types of hate crimes and who it effects. In short, race, religious, ethnic, LGBTQ and disability hate crimes.
